Marble Arch Inn (Wellington Vaults) 1958
in 1988 along with some serious history and it pretty much has
got the lot.
It was until recently called the Wellington Inn and, as the
Wellington Inn back in 1850, its landlord Mr. James Jones could
look out on a Rochdale Road dominated by textile mills, timber
yards and a mix of terraced houses and dark courts, all of
which would have been good news for this landlord with its
promise of a fair number of thirsty customers.
Just next door was Jane Cockrane, who was a widow and
who gave her occupation as a baker.
She shared her
house with four
others and, running
down the road in the
next seven
properties, were
another 39 people,
most of whom were
adults whom I
suspect knew the
inside of the
Wellington all too
well.
