Most people planning to take the walk from The
Lauriston Club on Manchester Road via The Lloyds and
The Spread Eagle to The Royal Oak and Sedge Lynn will
be pretty familiar with this stretch of Chorlton.
It is, after all, straightforward, starting on Manchester Road
and ending on Manchester Road with just that slight diversion
along Wilbraham and Barlow Moor Roads and, as such, appears
to present no surprises.
But there you would be wrong. Wilbraham Road is a late
addition, having only been cut in the late 1860s and, until 40 or
so years ago, Manchester Road was one continuous
thoroughfare.
It ran from the village green up over Wilbraham Road
through what is now a car park and rejoined its present course
beside the Co-op funeral parlour and The Sedge Lynn.
All of which makes me think we should slip back to when we
could have taken a pleasant stroll from the Horse and Jockey
past some wattle and daub cottages with little more to think
about than a pint in the old Royal Oak.
