Mr Raj Kaushal and Acharya Shyam Sunder Sharma
Council helped with a grant to repair
and restore the property.
Writing in 1987, Mr Raj Kaushal
described in some detail the early
history of the temple, which began a
decade earlier when, “the Hindu
Community in Manchester had
increased, but nothing had been done to
fulfil the growing cultural, social and
religious needs of the Community.
“This was partly addressed with the
formation of The Hindu Cultural Society
in 1978, which it was felt could fulfil the
basic needs of the local community”.*
The whole thing started with just five
families which met once a month in a local church hall, but as
the society grew in numbers it took the decision to buy the old
Congregational
Church on
Wilbraham
Road, which,
as Raj wrote,
“was infested
with dry rot,
broken
windows and a
Wilbraham Road Congregational Church Hall leaking roof”.
